What is Gaussian Splatting?
Gaussian Splatting is a method for rendering 3D images quickly and realistically. It’s mainly used in computer graphics and machine learning to create 3D scenes based on photographs.
How does it work?
Instead of using traditional 3D models made of polygons (like triangles), Gaussian Splatting works with point clouds. Each point in the cloud has a specific shape (a "Gaussian" — a kind of soft, blurry spot) and a color. By intelligently spreading thousands of these points across a scene, a computer can create a smooth and lifelike image.
Why is it special?
-
It’s fast and can render in real-time.
-
It creates smooth, detailed transitions without sharp edges.
-
It works well with real photos, making it great for 3D reconstructions of real-world scenes.
Think of it as a clever way to build a 3D image from millions of tiny, colored dots that come together to form a stunning visual!
